Hire in Milan or in Livigno?

If you’re driving from Milan, you can hire in the city. According to an Altroconsumo survey from February 2026, the basic kit (skis, boots and helmet) for a week costs €110 in the city and €164 in Livigno, which is still the cheapest of the five resorts compared. Hiring on the spot saves you loading the skis and crossing the Foscagno pass with the equipment, and if a boot hurts you swap it straight away.

To get an idea of accommodation too: for Livigno, with seven nights in a three-star hotel or a B&B, a five-day ski pass and travel, Altroconsumo worked out €3,207 at New Year and €2,340 at Carnival in the 2025-26 season, ski hire and meals excluded.

How to spend less

  1. Go at the start or the end of the season: the 6-day ski pass costs 31% less than in high season, and with 5 nights in a hotel booked directly it can be free.
  2. Bring small children: anyone born in 2019 or later skis free with an adult.
  3. Hire for your real level: expert skis cost 60% more than standard, and a beginner doesn’t need them.
  4. Compare hire in the city: if you’re driving from Milan and staying a week, hiring in the city costs less.
  5. Fill up in Livigno: it is outside the customs territory, and fuel costs less than in the rest of Italy.

Getting there from Milan

  • By car: about 200-220 km and 3-4 hours, through Lecco, Sondrio, Tirano and Bormio, then the Foscagno pass (2,291 m), open all year. From 15 October to 30 April you need winter tyres or chains on board.
  • From Switzerland: the Munt la Schera tunnel, single lane with alternating traffic, charges a toll. In 2026 it is closed for works from 26 October to 7 November.
  • By train and coach: train from Milano Centrale to Tirano, then the coach to Bormio and Livigno.
  • From the airports: the Livigno Express leaves from Malpensa and Orio al Serio every day, from Linate on Saturdays, from €65 each way, in about 4 hours 40.
